How to Manage Political Anxiety in Today’s Divisive Climate

June 24, 2025

Even though the presidential election is behind us for a few years, there’s no denying the sense of tension many of us still feel. So much of the country still seems divided when it comes to political stances, values, and more.

Things like social media and a constant stream of news don’t necessarily make matters better. They can fuel divisiveness and cause more stress, arguments, and even anxiety.

No matter who you voted for or what your political views might be, it’s understandable to struggle with political anxiety in today’s divisive climate. But, letting that anxiety take over and affect your quality of life can be dangerous.

So, what can you do to manage political anxiety? Let’s cover a few healthy coping mechanisms.

Limit Media Intake

It’s important to stay informed. You can’t live under a rock for the next few years while the world around you keeps moving. Being aware of what’s going on around you in the political climate is a responsibility every citizen should take seriously.

But, there’s such a thing as too much media consumption. Again, things like social media and news at your fingertips make it easy to get a ton of information. But, it can sometimes be hard to distinguish fact from fiction, avoid disagreements, or keep from feeling overwhelmed by all of it.

Take breaks from the news, and even social media. Consider setting aside time each day to get your information, and that’s it. This will keep you from becoming overloaded with information from both sides of the political aisle and can help you stay informed without getting overly anxious.

Be More Mindful

Mindfulness is one of the best ways to effectively manage anxiety. It’s the practice of staying grounded in the moment.

Like most types of anxiety, political worries are often fueled by thoughts of the future — the “what ifs” of a particular situation. Mindfulness allows you to focus on the here and now, rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.

Focus on things like deep breathing and meditative practices to be more mindful. When you feel anxious thoughts start to creep in, use these techniques to pull you back to the present.

Find a Support System

You’re certainly not alone in your struggle with political anxiety. Because things feel so divisive right now, many people are feeling uneasy and uncertain. Now is a great time to lean on your support system.

Find like-minded people to talk to, so you can build each other up, provide reassurance and comfort, and remind each other that you don’t have to deal with these feelings alone.

Take Action

Political endeavors often start at the ground level. You might feel like you don’t have a voice, but if you’re passionate about your political views, consider speaking out at local town meetings. Join organizations that share your views and values. Write letters to your local congress representative.

These might seem like small steps, but they can help you feel more empowered while focusing on the things you can control, rather than allowing the things you can’t control to take hold of your mind.

Talk to Someone

Having a solid support system is important. But, if your anxiety won’t seem to calm down, one of the best things you can do is to work with a mental health professional.

Therapy will help you better understand where your anxiety is coming from, and why it’s plaguing you so much. You’ll also learn healthy, effective coping mechanisms to manage your symptoms and fight back against invasive negative thoughts.
